I am so sorry for your loss. I've had many dogs over the years and they were all special in their different way. I thought that way until I had a ver special Golden Retriever that we had for 11 years. She was our "best dog" and can never be replaced.

We grieved for a long time, my son was 15 when she died and was his best friend. We had never felt such grief.

When she was diagnosed with cancer about a year before she passed we got another golden puppy. We thought it would be good for her to see what our best dog was lime and to teach her a bit. I don't know whether that was the right thing or not, but it worked out for us.

The puppy is now 14 and I see the end coming probably within the year and you know, I have now had the opportunity to have two best dogs. It took some time, but she has been my constant companion and she is sitting at my feet as I write this. Above me on the shelf are the cremated remains of our first best dog. We had her cremated since she died when we were a few months away from moving from Alabama to Seattle and we couldn't bear the thought of her not going with us. She is now with us in Alaska.

As you can see from all the responses, we are all sharing your pain today and tonight and thinking about the pets we have lost. Thanks for sharing this with this great group of folks.
