Thanks. I wonder if I did the right thing, letting her suffer all night. It was hard listening to her cry and moan. I thought about all the people who told me "you'll know when it's time" to put her down, like dogs can't die a natural death any more. But then I think what would I want -- lie on my death bed in pain in my favorite place where I've spent the happiest times of my life, or be hauled off and put to death so my moaning didn't disturb anyone. I'm not saying anything about what anybody else does with their dog, but when she stopped drinking water on Monday I knew she wasn't long for this world. Even when she was moaning, if I'd pet her and scratch her behind the ear, she'd quiet down. It wasn't much for me to have one sleepless night so the best dog could die naturally. She sure put up with me doing a lot more annoying things to her over the years, and spent a lot more time being patient and waiting while I did stuff that was completely boring to a dog.

I hope I get another one soon too. Looking for some kind of wolfy sled dog mutt. I don't want dog "with papers", and I don't want the pit bull mutts that are all over the place. They can be nice dogs, but they can't handle the snow and cold and don't seem to have a real good instinct for handling themselves out in the wilds like a dog that's more wolf-like has. Speaking of which just last week I saw wolf tracks 4-1/2" across in the dust on my road. I don't think I could catch it and make a pet out of it, though.
