Gas Tank Sending Unit Questions

I'm working on a 1946 WDX that has been converted to 12 volt. What needs to be done to get the sending unit to read on the dash gauge properly? It is a two-wire unit if that makes any difference.

Also, what is the best product to seal the cork floats? What was used originally?
