i have resisted an onboard charger on my boat for the same reason. lots of fires, lots of problems. on my boat, my alternator is able to keep the batteries topped up. i did install a battery isolator, that charges the batteries as needed and feeds the house and starting loads directly. my boat is at the dock from april to december and runs an automatic bilge. i run the boat most weekends, but can go over a month without worry. what is your electric demand that requires on board charging? do you have a power draw or load when not being used? if not, dead batteries indicate something going on.
