In support of this reasoning, recently I turned on my compressor and it refused to start. It made a weird hum. Upon checking the sub-panel, I remembered I had doubled up two single pole breakers with a little wire tying the two toggles together. (only a carpenter would do that) One side of the double breaker had tripped. Only 110 was going to the compressor.
