The lower contacts on the regulator are the circiut breaker portion and connects the battery directly to the generator. If you hold these closed you can cause the generator to try and become a motor. It won't spin because of the engines belt but can cause the regulator coil to overheat/ catch fire. This happened on my M37 years ago with 24volts. The contacts closed by themselves when I was cleaning the others and instantly the regulator was on fire. This explains why your ampmeter goes negative. The coil is supplied from the ignition key thru a lead off of the ampmeter terminal. If you don't have power to the coil I would start checking other places before the messing with the regulator. Try a jumper form the battery to the coil and check to see if it starts. If you have the older 6volt positive ground system like mine besure to use the correct combination of battery terminal and coil terminal..
