I don't usually weigh in on these things because I don't think I know anything about the "right" way to handle it. The best I can do is ask myself "What would I want my friends to do if I was dying?" Maybe others would want something different, but I'd just want them to visit, do regular things with me if I still could, tell me what they're up to, and listen to me if I had anything to day. Most of us don't get any practice for dying.

What I wouldn't want is people avoiding me because they didn't know what to say or thought it was contagious, or people telling me I'll be fine or speculating about what I did to bring it on. It's always the healthy people who are just sure that if you get this treatment or eat these herbs or go see some witch doctor or have a better attitude, then you'd be cured.

It's weird how things go in threes. A few years ago, three guys I knew died of brain tumors. Another year, three guys died in different climbing accidents in the mountains. I never knew anyone who died of a climbing accident or a brain tumor any other time, but in each case, there was three in the same year.
