I hear you on the 4BT install already being done but so has a 6BT. The 4BT vibrates slightly more than a 6BT but it's all in the install. You obviously can't mount one on springs like a factory WDX 230's done :)
I always thought a Mercedes 5 cyl would be a good choice but personally I'd steer away from all that electronic crap. The thing that makes a PW is it's a mechanical beast that can be fixed with vicegrips & a few screw drivers :)
The new diesels, & especially the European diesels...they're just too complicated.
The 4BT & 6BT are just such great power plants. It's so rare seeing one that's a leaker unless the owner hasn't maintained it properly. The quality of all the seals & design of the valve covers & rubber gaskets etc...there's a reason they're so popular & I'd also go so far as to say if you could install any diesel in a PW...the 4BT would be the best decision as far as value when you went to sell it. There's just something about a Dodge with a Cummins that can't be matched.
I guess a Caterpiller would be my second choice but it'd have to be an older mechanical Cat & I don't know much about them.
Mitsubishi makes great engines as well for the Fuso trucks. Just not sure of any reason to switch from Cummins.
