The main character in the movie "INMAN" is actually based on a soldier in the 25th.
The book shows that many soldiers came and went, sometimes going AWOL for a period of time. My ggGrandfather showed that he inlisted early and stayed the course through the war. He lived to live a good life and died of old age in Arkansas.
Not known if any of his artifacts exist. The oldest artifact in my family is a medallion cast in 1897 by the Mormon church and given to my ggGrandfather for his service 50 years earlier in the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican war. He made the longest infantry march in US Army history from Iowa to San Diego, CA.
