you might want to find/take a class (or a refresher class) in machine shop practice(s)
I still remember mine and the instructor
rule #1 no rings, loose cloths, belt, or anything that could get you caught up and
hurt and keep your hands away from the
rotating work
rules 2 thru 10 - same as #1
