Sounds like you need a better o-ring.
Been a while for me on kick downs, but in my mind I think of linkage, not cable. I'm think a cable would hook below the throttle cable? So that pulling the throttle tot he rear would pull the kick down towards the front. Adjust is usually carb full throttle = kick down also to end of stroke.
