The government is moving toward banning most of the mouse and rat poisons, because of "collateral damage". There have been many toddlers as well as pets that have eaten the stuff and been poisoned. I know lots of pet have accidentally died and assumed this has happened with children too. As you said, pets can also be secondarily poisoned if they eat the poisoned mouse.
So, traps or a cat is the best thing, unless you are not afraid of snakes. A blacksnake or bull snake is a good thing to have around an outside facility for mice, however they take "off" the winter by hibernating.
I have a female cat who lives outside unless it is really cold (bring into basement for night). She catches critters all year long. We feed her and have a bed for her in the garage, as well as take care of all her health needs of course. If cats (esp females) live outside they do well as mousers. The ones that are mainly indoor do not seem to be the hunters when outside that the 100% outdoor ones are. Also house cats tend to get a little "stocky" with time.
