To add to what Paul said, before I got too far in my restoration of the '52, I was weighing whether to go with 4.89 diffs or add the Dennan overdrive. I planned on keeping the 230 (rebuilding it also).
I opted for the overdrive for two reasons:
First, I still have the gearing/power I had before down low, and yet have basically an overdrive "5th" gear now for better highway drive-ability.
Second, if I wanted to do some extreme off road stuff I could take the O.D. out in less than two hours and replace the original drive shaft.
The 230 engine is not robust power wise. It needs all the help it can get.
Now, if I re-powered with diesel or a modern V-8, I would go with 4.89's.
