knowing folks that have them in both the old series style and the newer defender series, i have determined that they are good vehicles. they are not as stout as a 1 ton power wagon and are not as easily modified as a fj toyota. the main thing, like a pw is to get as rust free / corrosion free on the AL body as you can get and then practically all is available. when i lived in the uk, the big thing i saw was people redoing their series on top of newly produced, repro frames that were galvanized. they could buy a frame and move piece by piece over, rebuilding and replacing as they went. seemed a logical approach. at the time of the frame swap, modifications to steering and spring type as well as engine could be accomplished. aluminum knocking if required is not as forgiving as the heavy steel we are used to.
