Thats ia an old wives tale, dispelled for me in my 1939 Motors manual.

The pump will never spend any time in the middle. It either has pressure, and is at one end, or it has gone dry and is at the other end.

If you put it together in the mid stroke, the diaphragm will be flat, and need to get stretched to reach either end of it's stroke. Can you say RIP ? Or try to anyhow.

I make my own diaphragms, and even go so far as to punch slots for the screws. Home made is easy if the pump rod has a nut on the end. Otherwise, the swaged ones need a new rod with the diaphragm. Nygen, NOT neoprene. Neoprene is NFG for gas. Nygen is good for gas and ethanol. Not all black rubber is the same.

Rebuilding is easy to do, except for the sealer the factory uses to glue the thing together.
