Well, okay, but the original "ATF" was simply 10 weight motor oil, which is a lot lighter than the gear oil back in those days. Maybe ATF has such amazing lubricity and anti-wear properties that it makes up for having a thinner base oil. I'll defer to a real petroleum chemist on that one.
