Now the question is whether I can use GL5 oil in the newer synchro tranny. I mean, I AM using it, but should I not be? I did look at the army surplus oil I've been using and it's "MIL STD 2105E", which my research shows as being a modern EP oil equivalent to GL5. I also run across mention of newer EP oils that are formulated to be noncorrosive to yellow metal so you can use the same stuff in any gearbox. I haven't gotten over to look at that barrel of sticky red 85/140 yet to see just what it is, but at this point I think I'm going to go back to using the mil-spec stuff in my trucks and use the red stuff for chain saw oil and the dozer. I probably use more chain oil in a year than gear oil anyway.
