I did exactly what you describe many years ago. I drove out the rivets and replaced the damaged spindle with one from a front axle and attached with grade 8 bolts. I believe there WAS an alignment step and the weight is NOT on the bolts. I have carried enough weight to rest the frame pads on the axle housing with no failure to the spindle or bolts.
