Gear oil question

I was at the good oil place the other day, where the owner can tell you what's in every kind of oil he sells and what it's good for, and thought I'd ask him about gear oil for old Dodges. He looked in his chart and said basically they recommend GL-1 for transmissions and GL-5 for differentials, GL-1 being a non-EP oil that won't hurt yellow metal, and GL-5 being EP oil that differentials require. This seemed pretty straightforward, but thought I'd mention it here and see if that goes along with what the expert here say.

10 years ago I got 6 5-gallon buckets of army surplus 85/140 gear oil, and then about 5 years go I got a 55-gallon barrel of some sort of sticky red 85/140 at a yard sale for $20. I've been running one or the other of those in everything, since it was cheap, even though I know it's too thick. I can't even remember the GL number on either of them, but will check. The red gear oil makes great bar and chain oil, so I think I'll relegate it to that from now on, and get some new 80/90 for the gearboxes even though I hate to buy gear oil when I already have so much on hand. I suppose the old cat can still run the thick stuff.

The main thing I'm wondering is how many guys run a different oil in their PW/M37 transmissions versus differentials and how important that is.
