Latest tech in head / bolt design. Though I ran into it 25 years ago on a Peugeot Diesel.

The bolt must be a precision length, and the head a precise thickness. The bolt bottoms into the hole in the block, which is bored to a precise depth. Typical torque spec would be something like "90 ft/lbs, plus 90°".

I was married to that Peugeot, had the head off 5 times for head gasket probs. It got worse each time, especially when we surfaced it-again. Then we found a spec for head thickness. Turns out you need to mic the head, and add washers to the bolts to make up for any milling.

Now those bolts, yeah, probably ought to replace them every time.
