Easy test on the coil is to remove the high tension lead from the dist. cap and hold 3/16 from a ground - engine. If blue spark when cranking the engine, coil is good. Anything else, replace the coil.

To check for coil polarity, remove a spark plug wire while engine is running and insert a sharpen pencil between wire and plug leaving small gap on each side. If spark jumps between pencil and plug, correct polarity.

Try installing a voltage limiter in-line, in front of the gauges to limit the voltage going to them. This keeps the current going to the instruments at a steady level of about 5 volts.

I think you still have a wiring problem. What type of alternator are you using. If it's a one wire, is it Ford, or Mopar? If Mopar, does it have an internal regulator? Is the field wire going to the ign. on the ignition switch, back to negative side of ammeter, back to BAT terminal on alt.?
