Finishing up my truck and having some problems with my gauges. Running 12 volt aftermarket U.S. made gauges. When I did the first test run everything was fine and working. 5 minutes in my tach started smoking. Shut down and unplugged and rest of electrics was fine.

Triple checked wiring and it was all correct with dedicated grounds that welded stainless studs. Called the company and they said my coil was probably bad. They said to replace coil as it is a "common" problem. I ask how to check that and they said I would need an oscilscope to do so. I said my brother was an electrical engineer and has one and needed the specs. Silence on their end and finally said he didn't have the specs in front of him. I ask him to put me in touch with someone who would know and he said it's specs are the same as any coil and my brother would know what it was. HMMMM.

2 weeks past and now my gas gauge has died. sender is not the problem Wondered about too much voltage and checked and I had 14.55 at the battery post. Called manufacturer again and they said to test at gauge as it will drop a lot. Did that and it is a whopping .05 to .1 volt drop. Called the place that sold the alt and they said 14.5 is what it is supposed to be.

Called the gauge people again and they say no more than 12.5 volts at the gauges. Now I'm no expert but I was always told you have to be at least 13.2 volts to recharge the battery. I'm pretty sure the gauge guy is lost but does anyone have any ideas besides just bad gauges or what to test. Thanks for any insight. Kevin
