And they were designed to run on 65 octane gas.
So better gas, and light load, you can run more advance. But the centrifugal advance is set for heavier loads with worse gas. So advancing the initial makes up for that.
I do fiddle around inside the distributor to get the best power under a load, and about 10°BTDC inital. With the starter motor, they usually start best at about 10°. I haven't actually hand cranked one at that setting though, might be a wrist biter.
I think I have both a factory advance curve setting and my own that I arrived at by trial and error, if anybody wants to experiment.
