There are many designs of split rims. I guess thee ones on our dodges are early fool proof. As the tire bead wides with air, it locks the ring into it's groove in the rim. Most other designs lack that feature. Just be sure things are clean and the ring is not so bent it won't keep itself in the groove. And be aware that things can go bad- use a chain, mount it backwards on an axle, or a safety cage. And always use a remote fill system, like a clip on chuck.

I prefer the split because they are easier to change and fix flats on the side of the road or down Baja. No wrestling a tire over the drop center. f course, that only counts of the rim has been de-mounted and cleaned sometime in the last decade or so.
