Tim I got to meet one of my best friend's dad a few months ago. He told me he had trained with his infantry unit for the beaches on D-Day and was ready to load the boats when someone in the high command gave the order at the last minute to remove all initial assault personnel wearing glasses. If glasses were lost in the surf, they would be sitting ducks.
So he went in on the second day and was involved in the "Hedgerow" fighting. He told me he later found out that 80% of his platoon was wounded or killed. His still thinks about his buddies who never came home.
