'Cup plugs' are the newer system, the old ones were shallow convexs that expand the OD when hit with a hammer. They are not made to be gently tapped into place. They should show a dent from getting smacked- too many mechanics today are mamby-pamby with the hammer.

I had one fall out of my five-window - no dents in any. I guess they were trusing in the sealer? They should be installed against the shoulder/counterbore, convex outward, and flattened. A nice neat flat across the center section is good.

If you have to use steel because you can't get brass, coat the inhere surface with sealer. Like chicken soup, it couldn't hoit.
