Weeping Freezeplug

WDX #984 is shedding green tears from the driver side right behind the oil filler tube and lines. Guess I have to drain the block and replace the plug.

What causes a weep? Does the plug crack in sacrifice to save the block from cracking? anyone know the part number for the correct replacement?
