Fuel economy has not improved because the federal nannies have been trying to kill diesel for about 20 years. Diesels now run as clean as gassers, but at a price for mpg.
Just an FYI from a diesel engineer buddy of mine, the Ford burns 0.52 pounds/ hp/ hr, the Cummins burns 0.39 pounds/ hp/ hr. Making the Cummins significantly more cost effective to operate.
