You didn't say what's wrong with your old one. Unless the windings shorted out, which is unlikely on a good old American tool, and which you would have noticed from the heat, smokes, and sparks, it's probably quite fixable.

Surely you've already checked the brushes, which should be removable and replaceable without taking the housing apart. If not, check them. Brushes, especially on the older tools, are fairly standardized and any motor shop or even a really complete hardware store will have a selection. Assuming the brushes are good, you'll have to take it apart and do a little troubleshooting with a meter, or give it to someone who can. There isn't too much that can go wrong, and if it just suddenly "quit" without any funny noises or heat, it's probably just a broken connection or possibly a worn-out switch.

The least-fixable possibility is that it did have a shorted winding, but it has a non-repairable "thermal fuse" in the coil that opened up when the windings got hot. This is a safety feature that a lot of products should have but most don't. They can be replaced, but if the underlying problem (shorted turns in a coil) is still there, the new one will blow too.

My hunch is that there's something simple that broke or came loose that will be easy to fix it you take it apart and look.
