Electrical problems.

I'm driving my '59 PJ down the street and for no reason the ampmeter shoots off the scale (on the charge side) I can hear the load on the alternator change, the lights get brighter, the heater fan races, etc. Then it flips to the extreme discharge side (lights go dim,etc). The engine is new, the alternator is new and I just replaced the voltage regulator.(12volt system) Still does it. Does it worse when the lights are on. Any suggestions or comments? Could it be a short? A bad relay on the Ampmeter? Bad wiring?
