You can do 55 mph with a 318 in a stock M37 with 5.83 gears and 900x16 tires. 3200 RPM will do it. The stock 230 will top out at 2800 rpm, which equates to 45 mph.

Changing to 4.89 gears will easily get you 60 mph with a 318, and not so easily with a 230, since you are running out of torque. But get there it will, except uphill.

To be exact, 3200 rpm will get you 65 mph with 4.89's, and 2800 rpm w/4.89's will do 57 mph. You'll actually be pushing 2900 rpm with a 230 to get 60 mph, which is perhaps at the limit of sustained rpm.

Unless a diesel has a sustained rpm limit less than the 230, it should easily do 60 mph.
