In real estate, it's locat1on. In vehicle wiring, it's ground. That's the return path. Electricity comes TO the filaments through the red or the brown wires and goes FROM the filaments through the metal bulb base, then through the bulb receptacle, through the metal tail light housing, through the tail light housing mounting bolt(s), through the tail light bracket, through the bed, to the truck frame. Check with a jumper wire from the base of the bulb socket to the truck frame. If the wiring TO the tail light is correct, and the jumper wire is making good contact, it will work. Once you have determined you do not have a good ground, check the mounting of every component listed above for a good metal-to-metal contact. If you have an original pick up bed, the bed mounting bolts go through the wood floor. There should be a ground wire connecting the metal parts of the bed to the frame. Or you can just make the jumper wire part of the circuit. Special note: If your tail light assembly is plastic, there should be a wire or flat metal strip from the bulb socket to a rivet where the mounting bolt passes through the plastic housing. On some plastic housings, the mounting bolt(s) go through a metal inner structure that has the bulb socket mounted to it. The important thing is that the bulb socket must be grounded by metal-to-metal contact to the truck frame. Hope this helps.
