Galen,

I used a rented engine hoist and a chain from the hoist attached to 3 or 4(?) loosened head bolts. I placed thick washers under the head bolts and ran the bolts through the chain and into the block, making sure to have several turns into the block. This held the engine for hoisting, long enough for me to bolt the engine to an engine stand.

I used a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan, and lifted the engine slightly (just enough to take some weight). I then removed the front mount bolts, and I removed the bolts that hold the engine to the bellhousing.

With the transmission out of the truck, I removed the flywheel. This must be done in order to get the engine out without taking out the bellhousing.

I didn't bother to remove the brake and clutch pedals. The steering box won't interfere, either.

With items such as fuel lines, throttle linkage, wires, etc removed from the engine, it should lift right out of there. It helps to remove the accessories and other external components, too (such as generator, oil filter, distributor, manifolds, etc.).

I had already removed the fenders, hood (of course) and radiator.

I think that's all there is to it, if I remember right.

Have fun and be safe.

Matt
