Frankly I'm surprised that the method of "shot pinning" has not come up. I have read several articles on this process for hardening the surface of metal over the years in 4x4 and racing mags.
Before grinding or machining, the piece is subjected to surface bombardment of tiny metal shot which compacts the surface molecules.I believe there was a process that could be done before the shot pinning to check for existing microscopic flaws or cracks in the piece called something to do with "flux".It was treated it seems with a liquid or dye that under special lighting, showed the flaws or cracks undetectable with the eye. I would search and question about this process as well as shot pinning. I don't believe it is as risky or as pricey as the heat treating methods sound. If someone remembers this method and/or knows more about it please reply to this post as I myself had almost forgotten about it until the hardening issue was brought up.I had expected to hear it brought up,maybe it had slipped other memories as well.
