Thinking along the same lines. The problem with sections, though, is the buckling. If you already know this, skip it, just wanted to al3rt anybody else thinking this way. Perpendicular loads through columns are easy to support, as long as the load stays in-line. Thats why the poles are pinned, no "torque" to support. The sectioned poles will try, unless clearances are very tight, to get "un-parallel" (technical term!). When they do, it takes very little load to buckle them. I don't have a solution yet, still looking.
