I've found that tires can really help or hurt your mileage. Oversized/fat tires look great, but are going to kill your mileage. If mileage is that big of a concern run a good quality tire ie. Michelin or Goodyear without the aggressive tread. P.S. An 83' probably has a manual overdrive or freeway gears.
