Tim, the way it sounds, you wont want to skimp on the compressor. Any sand blast equipment needs a lot of CFM per min to work properly. This means a 2 stage, probably in the 15-20 cfm range. It is better to have more than enough than run short with air. Be ready to spend about 7-1500 dollars on a decent compressor. It will last several life times on hobby use. This will hurt when you buy it, but you will be thankfull you did later. I bought a smaller one and wish i spent the money on a larger unit every time I use it. I now have a 48"x26" cyclone sandblast cabinet on its way to me and will be forced to get the better unit now.(Did i save anything?) Fortunatly I have a friend that has a body shop and also needs the cabinet for a resto on a 70 olds.(We went half on it) Will set it up in his garage on his air untill I can get a good air supply. As far as a blast cabinet goes, I looked around alot and was really happy with the one I am getting.($1170)shipped from the factory. This is really more than I wanted to spend, but I feel that I will not be sorry down the road. Maybe even a few blasting jobs on the side will help pay it off! The money that would have been spent on shipping parts out will also cover a lot of the bill.
I am not saying that you need to run out and buy all comercial grade tools, but get the best that you can aford. You will have it the rest of your life and when the kids start to show intrest, one less tool they will need. have him/her buy the mig!!!! Good luck and shop before you buy.
John
