One thing I do to save the tip is to drill starter hole if I'm faced with cutting a slug out of the center of a sheet. The blow back on start up was the culprit to most of my problems. It's rare now to have to replace tips by doing that. Starting on an edge is never a problem.

Another nice tip is to get several lengths of 1 1/2 box tubing to use as straight edges. I clamp them with C clamps. Mark your line and use a couple small chunks of flat stock to space out from the line.(the distance fom the tips riding edge to the edge of your cut line. Mine is a 1/2 inch. Makes it quick and easy. Remember that a plasme leaves a bigger kerf than a torch so sometimes tilting the torch head will give you a starighter cut on thick stuff.Kevin
