I've found that many of the people I see waiting at the bus stops, eating off the dollar menus, etc, are folks who have been employed, some of them for many years, but who've been laid off or cut back due to the local economy.
Some have been able to find other jobs; some are still looking. And I'm sure some are lazy, and willing to live on the dole as long as possible.
But, for whatever reason, the fact is, there are a lot of people in this country who just aren't making it, financially. Too much regulation, outsourcing, unfair taxation, unbridled capitalism - whatever the cause (and I think there are many), the situation is grim. We're starting to look like a third-world country, and by that I'm not referring to skin color or ethnicity.
And as for me, well, I had thought that the resources I'd saved would be enough to keep me going for a long time. But then, that's life: the only thing constant is change...
