You swap the third member directly in the housing. With 4 pinion 8&3/4" members, you need to buy step studs to install in the 1/2 ton housings since the mounting holes in the 4 pinion members are 7/16-20 and the 1/2 ton members are 3/8-16. VPW sells them. Get John Zentmeyers book "Power Trains and Interchanges:Military?Civilian Trucks 1941-1971(Dodge) if you are Interested in this subject. VPW sells them. It's a little bit more complicated if you want to Install an 8&3/4" member in a 3/4 or 1.5 ton truck that has the 9&5/8" member.
