The one thing about DMV and Automobile Club is that you are are likely to get different answers from different clerks. So, shopping around can help.

If your registration is too complicated, automobile club is likely to send you to dmv. When they did this to me, I just went to a different automobile club and they registered my truck without problem.

Often, they will put a note in the computer about what is needed to complete the registration. They will give you a printout of the note. Then you will probably have to comply with the note since it is in the computer for all clerks to see.

I have never had to provide a current year (or any) registration only a valid title. I'm not sure how it works, but I have never been charged for a vehcile having been unregistered in another state. California just wanted to see a Non-0p certificate for the time the truck was in California. But, this is one of those things that may vary clerk to clerk.

It may be worthwhile to go through one of the private DMV registration places. They know the in's and out's, and what to say.
