I went through this, and this is exactly what is needed:

AAA didn't and couldn't register my truck. I heard the same as everyone here said, but it was the same for both the PW & my CJ.

1-you need a valid title. They were relentless and unforgiving on this.

2- I started the process calling it a non-op to buy me time to get a valid title. You pay the fees then (estimated). Same would be true of an unregistered vehicle. You need to certify it hasn't been on public roads. If you have current registration, you can skip this, but it still buys you time if you need it.

3- If road worthy, you need temp registration ( mine was a temp road permit to & from DMV) to bring it in for an inspection if not current registration. They were very cool during the inspections of both my vehicles. The CJ was the tough one because of mods & smog, but it was good, and they didn't look to nitpick. Same w/ the PW 'cept it has the 265 and looked stock. They like stock, and if modified under the hood, they might require documentation. They were particular about it being gas & not diesel.

4-You need a wt certificate. Mine is a flatbed, so I got hosed, and I saved the wt cert for last after it cleared all the other hurdles so I'd never get caught admitting it was on the road without being legal. I had to run about 10 miles down a freeway for the wt cert, and although I cruised 60, I didn't want to get pulled over.

DMV was very polite & professional through out. I'd take it slow and have your ducks in a row so you don't end up on the Group W bench.
