I removed the pan and removed all the sludge and old oil with a broad knife / scraper until the pan was completely clean. I put in 10W - 30 and since then have heard some rather loud rapping noises from the engine at high idle. When I checked the oil it was down a quart so I brought back up to full. I didn't change or clean the cartridge filter paper either. The noise from the engine makes me a little nervous.
