No, this was in Wenatchee, the judge was a woman, and the woman who got her no-insurance ticket thrown out was the just-divorced ex wife of one of the very rich sons of the man who built the Tree Top Apple Juice company and sold it out to some big conglomerate for piles of money. In New York nobody would give them a second glance, but in Wenatchee they're big shots. I've listened in in traffic court lots of different times and places and invariably if the person has a "no insurance" ticket and they challenge it, the judge asks if they now have insurance and to sees the proof of it. If they do have insurance, they'll usually reduce the ticket by half. And that's when all they had was a "no insurance" ticket, not a wreck that they caused where the damage won't be paid for by the insurance they didn't have. I'd never seen anyone get a "no insurance" ticket completely dismissed. I even wrote to the judge ahead of her court date to make sure she (the judge) knew that she had wrecked my car while she didn't have insurance, but I got back a form letter that says they're not allowed to consider such things.

The good thing is the State of Washington sent her a letter threatening to revoke her license if she didn't pay up, which got her to send me about $200, but then she moved to Oregon and is no doubt still driving around with no insurance.
