Some of the 1 tons had automatic locking hubs from the factory on the Dana 60's. They incorporated a spring assembly with dogs that would dissengage inside the hub. Overtime the grease inside them would dry up and the dogs would stick out therby not letting the axle lock in.

I went with my Dad to look at a 1 84 Dodge 1 ton a guy bought at an auto auction. He said it had a blown front axle as it was 2wd only. I crawled under it and spun the driveshaft and told Dad to buy it... fast.

Got it home and took the hubs off and threw them in the parts washers to free the dogs. regreased and reinstalled and in 15 minutes a $2500.00, 30,000 mile truck became a fully working truck.
