I am merely pointing out what is recommended by the Army Technical Manual (TM 9-1808A). See page 114, j. for full description:

• “Apply a coat of engine oil or joint and thread compound to both sides of gasket and place the gasket over the cylinder head studs.”

• Page 88, c., .006 max war page for head
• Block is .004 max

I guess you can interpret "joint and thread compound to be something other than pipe, and that's fine, pipe works just as good, the head on my engine is sealed with pipe.

Today’s engine uses tighter tolerances because gaskets are much thinner. A head gasket of .020 or .030 and compression of 9-1 is not going to be as forgiving as these older engines.

Oil and compound reduce friction when torquing the head for a better sealing and prevent or minimize rust on surfaces.

It is what it is. Follow the recommendations of your machinist, mechanics and the latest in gismos and gadgets, and rebuild your engines!
