From what I have read and been told it is ok for .223 rounds to be shot through a gun with a barrel stamped .223, 5.56, .223/5.56 or .223 wylde.
A .223 chamber is slightly smaller in the throat and neck area than a 5.56 chamber. Therefore you COULD be jamming a larger 5.56 round into a tighter .223 chamber if the rifle is stamped .223 on the barrel.

My AR-15 is a dedicated .223 chamber gun. It says ".223" on the barrel. It should only have .223 rounds put in it. If you have a rifle that says ".223/5.56" on the barrel it will shoot either. If you have one stamped ".223 wylde" on the barrel it will also shoot both.
Now to confuse things a little more, the lower unit on an AR will say .223/5.56. But that is only for the lower(just the trigger and magazine holder-no chambering or bullet firing involved).
Do a google for .223 vs. 5.56 and it will give some better info and alot more detail. I also think there is a video on youtube of a guy jamming 5.56 ammo in .223 rifle that ends up blowing the side of the reciever off. i will see if I can find it.
