I'm in the process of doing my own '48 B1 third member. My experience? Years ago I rebuilt the tranny/transfer case in my CJ2A. It works to this day. (I should have replaced the second gear. Still slips occasionally.)
I am not retired. I"m on the road continuously as a truck driver for the better part of four weeks a month and get 4 consecutive days off a month. Family obligations and decompression time eat up two of those days. Care for my property comes next and will eat up the better part of a third day. Getting the Volvo ready for the road again will consume a half-day.
I'm not rich or even reasonably well off. Getting there, though. I've had to search far and wide for parts and have had to make more than a few of my own tools.
It is now the better part of two years a work in progress. You will learn many things and a few skills. You will make a few new friends. You will do things you think at first impossible. You will learn to have everything you need at hand and in place before beginning a task.
Do it for yourself, if nothing else.
