The different color on the subject of posts you've read is the browser's way of indicating that it has those pages in its cache (stored on your computer for quick access). You're right that when you clear all browser history, that goes away. However, if you dig down deeper in the browser options (Tools | Clear recent history in FireFox) you'll see options for choosing what to clear. If you just want to clear cookies, leave "cookies" checked, but uncheck "cache". So long as you don't clear the cache, the different colors on read and unread posts will remain. Eventually the cache gets full and the oldest items will get automatically removed, but by that time Joe has usually started a new forum, or if not, the deleted items are so far down that you're looking at them anyway. There's usually no practical reason to clear the cache. The setup of the browser dedicates a certain amount of disk space to the cache (which you can change) so once you've set it, it uses up that much of the disk whether it's full or empty. The main reason people clear the cache is to keep others from snooping around and seeing pages from other websites they visited. If you're not trying to keep your browsing secret, just leave the cache alone.
