There's something about Sears motors. I had a Sears weed-eater and a Sears electric drill that both died with the motor catching fire -- as in flames and smoke coming out.
The dumb "service tech" probably thought he knew something when he'd noticed that universal motors (with brushes) often spark a little bit. Of course air compressors have induction motors with no brushes and there should never be any arcing in them. It reminds me of the tool clerk who tried to tell me a tap wrench wasn't a "hand tool" and therefore wasn't guaranteed.
I'm glad you pulled rank on the supervisor and got the tech his walking papers.
